All Chicken Coop applications must go before the Zoning Board of Appeals for approval.
Village of Roscoe Ordinance Chapter 155 Article VIII Section 15-546 requires the following information be submitted to apply for a chicken coop permit.
- Permit fee of $25.00 paid to the Village of Roscoe
- Chicken Coop Application signed by owner and applicant
- Photo of chicken coop
- Livestock Premise Registration Number
- Site Plan must include the following: a drawing that should be to scale, lot dimensions, location of existing structures on site, proposed coop and run location w/setback distances from the lot lines, distance from the coop and run to adjacent homes. Coop Plan with Dimension should include the following: a floor plan of the coop with dimensions indicating the location of the opening (such as windows and doors), the location and dimensions of the run, the height of the coop and run (aerial of property showing lot lines and dimensions can be found at wingis.org)
Chicken Keeping
(a)On lots less than or equal to one acre with a primary use of a single-family or two-family dwelling, the keeping of up to six chickens may be permitted as an accessory use.(
b)On lots greater than one acre with a primary use of a single-family or two-family dwelling, the keeping of up to six chickens plus one additional chicken per half acre in excess of one acre may be permitted as an accessory use.(
c)Neither the keeping of roosters nor the keeping of chickens for slaughter shall be permitted.
(d)Chickens shall be provided with a covered enclosure and must be kept in the covered enclosure or a fenced enclosure at all times.
(e)Enclosures are not permitted in any front or side yard and shall be set back a minimum distance of ten feet from all property lines.
(f)All feed and other items associated with the keeping of chickens that are likely to attract or to become affected by pests shall be protected and stored.
Urban Chickens
(a)The maximum number of domestic hens permitted to be kept on a property zoned and occupied for a single-family residential use shall be limited to six hens.
(b)The keeping of roosters and the slaughter of any chicken is prohibited.
(c)All chicken coops shall be approved through the village's design review process.
(d)Hens shall be housed in an enclosed chicken coop approved by the zoning department, or within an adjacent covered outside fenced in area. The outside area shall be no larger 32 square feet.
(e)Hens shall be kept in the enclosure and let out only with supervision in a fenced yard.
(f)The enclosure and adjacent occupied fence area shall be set back 30 feet from any adjacent residential structure, and not less than 20 feet from the property line.
(g)All enclosures shall be constructed and maintained in a manner to be free of rodent infestation.
(h)A coop permit issued by the village shall be required prior to the installation of any chicken coops. Anyone desiring a permit for a coop shall pay a $25.00 fee to the village.
(i)All electrical services must be inspected and approved by the county building department. Extension cords may not be used to provide power to chicken coops.
(j)All areas where hens are kept shall be maintained neat and clean, and free of undue accumulation of waste such as to cause odors detectable on adjacent property.
(k)The owner shall not allow chickens to produce noise loud enough to disturb the peace of neighbors.
(l)The owner shall allow inspections from the village code enforcement and zoning department.
